Mathematics of EnigmaA specialized talk on codes and ciphers in general and the mathematics underlying the operation of the Enigma Machine in particular. It includes an analysis of the techniques used to break its ciphers. Following a demonstration of the Enigma machine, students are led through a sequence of calculations to ascertain the number of ways it can be set up. We take into account various procedures adopted by the Germans and different versions of the machines. This is followed by how the Polish Code breakers cracked Enigma in the early 1930s. This programme is adjusted to take into account the age and mathematical maturity of the students and is self-contained.
Please note, this is not a workshop. Gifted GCSE and A level students only. |
