Station X radio room

Station X

In a turreted tower at the top of the Mansion, a tiny radio room nestles under the water tanks. Using an aerial slung from the chimneys down to the trees by the lake, it maintained contact with British Embassies in Europe during 1939 and early 1940. It was this radio room that first bore the name 'Station X', a reference to the fact that Bletchley Park was the tenth of a large number of sites acquired by MI6 for its wartime operations. However, the radio room's contribution was short-lived. With such an aerial clearly visible, Station X could hardly be kept secret, so it was soon dismantled and re-sited at nearby Whaddon Hall. Radio enthusiasts have recently restored the station to its operational state.
